Ferrous sulfate heptahydrate is green in color, monoclinic or granular, and odorless.
Relative density 1.898, melting point 64°C. It is readily soluble in water (48.6 g/100 ml water). It decomposes red-hot at 50°C to form ferric oxide. It is soluble in glycerol, is corrosive, and weathers in dry air. At 56.6°C, the heptahydrate converts to a tetrahydrate, and at 64.6°C, it becomes a monohydrate. At 90°C, six waters of crystallization are lost, and at 300°C, all waters of crystallization are lost, forming an anhydrous substance. Upon red-hot heating, SO₂ and SO₃ decompose and release SO₃. It is corrosive and fluoresces in dry air. The anhydrous substance is a white powder, but turns bluish-green when mixed with water.
